The Study Site

Our research
focuses on an actively braided reach of the Rees River at the head of Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand. The Rees has a labile gravel bed, which braids extensively in response to high sediment delivery from the uplifting Southern Alps and the wide accomodationspace in this recently deglaciated landscape.

Our research focuses on a 4 km long reach within which the river is reworking a fairway of between 200-500 m; constrained by high lake stand terraces and modern stopbanks.  Approximately 7 km downstream, the Rees coaleses with the larger Dart River to form an extensive delta which is prograding into Lake Wakatipu.
