The New River Surveyor: ArgoScan

Working with Mark Neal and Fred Labrosse from the Intelligent Robotics team at the University of Wales Aberystwyth, we have developed a bespoke, ruggidized mobile scanning system designed for the rigours of working on the rough, wet, windy Rees River.

ArgoScan integrates state of the art sensors, including a precision laser scanner from Leica Geosystems with a vision and GPS-based guidance system.

These sensors are controlled by on-board computers and all mounted on an ArgoATV, an amphibious all-terrain vehicle which allows us to cross the rough gravel flats and shallow rivers.

ArgoScan can acquire upto 1,000,000,000 survey points per day at millimetre precision and allows us to create extreme resolution 3d models of Rees River as it changes its form through the New Zealand summer flood season.

The original ArgoScan prototype in Aberystwyth
Testing the ArgoScan prototype on Tan-y-Bwylch beach in Aberystywyth.  This design features a fully robotized vehicle which uses an intelligent navigation system to control where it surveys!
